4.1 Application and Advertisement

Action 4.1C Design flexible and accessible application processes, offering equity of opportunity for all to showcase their skills and experience.

Guidance

To ensure equity of opportunity in your recruitment process, design flexible and accessible application processes.

Consider the following strategies:

  • Ensure Online Application Portals are Accessible: If using online jobs boards/portals to advertise roles, ensure they comply with accessibility standards before committing to using them (see Action 2.1A), allowing all candidates to navigate and complete applications, including those using assistive technologies.
  • Provide Accessible Application Forms: Create application forms that are accessible to individuals with various disabilities, ensuring adherence to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) AA standard. This includes using clear, simple language, providing instructions in multiple formats, and ensuring compatibility with assistive technologies.
  • Allow Alternative Submission Formats: Offer alternative submission formats to accommodate different needs where possible. For example, allow candidates to submit applications via video, or audio recordings if they prefer or require these formats.
  • Utilise Diverse Communication Channels: Communicate job positions through a variety of channels and methods to reach a diverse pool of candidates. Use social media, community boards, disability networks, and other platforms to ensure broad visibility.
  • Provide Support: Offer the opportunity to share accessibility/accommodation needs for recruitment as part of the application form and provide a contact in the company who can support individuals having difficulty with the application process (see Action 4.1D).

“Being told you can only apply online (in one way) is very inaccessible for some people to begin with. The Information is often not easy to understand and engage with, and some of our service users lack good technology skills.”

By implementing these strategies, you create a more inclusive application process that allows all candidates to showcase their skills and experience effectively. This approach not only enhances diversity but also ensures that you attract the best talent for your organization.
